about

Safe Words explores the experiences of street harassment faced by disabled folks and questions the need to perform hyper competence in public in order to avoid that harassment and other harms. Juxtaposed with safety as a social condition and/or measure that is always being worked towards or strived for as a possible future and hope.

The soundscape was designed with the original intention of being the backtrack for live performance art by two disabled artists, and wheelchair-users, however due to the 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic, the project has been delayed without any certain future. This is not the entirety of the soundscape, but enough to get a sense of what it involved.

The soundscape includes many layers of synthesizer tracks, environmental sound samples, bass guitar, flute, cello, and electronic drums, as well as live recorded samples of wheelchair sounds from the performers.

The photograph is of a Romanesco Broccoll because earlier versions of the performance engaged with the concept of Broccoli being the possible safe word.

about

Quivering Toronto, Ontario

Steff Juniper creates sound art, noise, and drone to externalize their emotional experience
of anger toward oppressive systems, especially carceral colonial institutions, and
the creation of climate collapse - with haunting vocals, electric cello,
synthesizers, chimes, field recordings, etc.

Requests for collaborations are welcomed and encouraged.
